Farm Profile

Fold Farm is a small 6^th generation family run dairy farm in the Peak District village of Sheen.  We milk 70 cross bred cows in a grazing system aiming for the cows to be grazing at grass for as long as possible throughout the year.  This allows us to work with nature and maximise productivity from what we have at hand. We aim to farm in a way the regenerates and improves the land that we work with instead causing it any harm.  We don’t apply any chemical fertiliser or use any chemical sprays for weeds, instead choosing to improve soil health and grow a variety of herbs and grasses that encourage and grow a healthy ecosystem.

Not only do we milk cows we also keep pigs, chickens, bees and the odd beef cow to produce food predominantly for ourselves but also to share with others.

Throughout our farm we strive for the highest animal welfare, choosing to breed a cross breed combing British Friesians, Jerseys and Scandinavian Reds. The cow then has fantastic health traits and great quality milk, this minimises vet intervention. We don’t vaccinate our cows as it is not necessary likewise antibiotics are only used when needed and with our breeding choices and welfare practices this is not very often at all. This cross breed of cow also gives us a smaller cow limiting damage to our fields in the spring and autumn allowing us to keep them out at grass longer and longer. This year some of our cows were out grazing until the 1^st of January and we aim to have them back out by mid March.

Everything we do here at the farm works hand in hand, the pigs drink any waste milk, it leads to a lovely creamy flavour in the fat. We are donated waste organic veg from a local veg box company to supplement their feed, giving them an interesting varied diet.

Bees are a relatively new addition to the farm, for the last five years we have been keeping a few hives at the farm. What a wonderful creature they are. We have noticed more blossom on the trees, better regeneration of herbs in the grazing pastures and great yield on the fruit trees in the garden. This is all in a days work for the bees but the added bonus is the by-product of their work,  Honey! We ensure we leave our bees with enough honey to keep them strong and healthy through winter but it still leaves us with some wonderful, health benefiting, golden honey. We love it and so do so many others, customers have told me stories of their hay fever being greatly reduced and an other when applied to a nasty burn has had a better success than anything the doctors could provide.
